Psychologists in recent decades have centered on the importance for our mental health and recommended that we effectively deal with challenges. I feel it is better to do so on the basis of knowing our diverse strengths and potential.

A couple of researchers have suggested that we make a supreme effort to focus on positive thoughts and never allow negative thoughts that grow into haunting mental monsters.

To be able to focus on our strengths, here are different aspects of self-management skills.

  1. Work-life balance. Who said we can’t have it all? The book Built To last has the concept of ‘’Genius of the AND’’ or the ‘’Tyranny of the OR’’ which can be the epitome of attaining integration. We can achieve success in both our social and work life.
  • Have and pray for a clear vision.
  • Spend time with friends or family, and alone.
  • Take care of our bodies physically, spiritually and mentally.
  • Have a conducive work environment.

  1. Good health entails a healthy body, mind, spirit and environment. We become ineffective and can’t cope when we are unhealthy because of stress.
  2. Self-care is crucial because the game of life can throw us curve balls and deal us unknown cards, but how we play the game is what matters.
  3. It’s important to have stress management skills.
  • Focus on what is important for our growth.
  • Learn coping mechanisms.
  • Learn problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  1. Integrity is king. Transparency and ethical choices make for wholesome leaders, who can be trusted- It means a commitment to doing right.
  2. Dealing with our personal weaknesses and vulnerabilities is imperative in self- management. It may be power, money, arrogance, addiction or something else. Spiritual growth, prayer and seeking virtues like humility, health, discipline and integrity helps in knowing and dealing with our weaknesses.
  3. Self actualization means developing a picture of ourselves that is affirming. Personal and professional development gives us some space to grow and develop our capabilities.
  4. Action is an antidote for fear. Inaction on the other hand bolsters fear and shatters confidence.

Practice and share these skills with your colleagues and friends, and keep improving yourself.
